Another busy year has passed for the Pueblo Pioneer Cemetery Association and we wish everyone a Happy New Year. We would also like to thank you for your support in 2014 and let you know our plans for 2015.
Progress has been going on at the cemetery most of it is not seen by the public. These unknown events we would like to bring to your attention, so you can see we are not just sitting around doing nothing. First of all, we have joined a group called CoCem. This is short for Colorado Cemetery Project. It is a group in the Denver region that is trying to get all the cemeteries in the state to join their project to help cemetery groups in need to get, grants and also do a complete survey of the cemetery. Matthew, the agent for this area came down in the spring and collected all the data cards for the cemetery and all the death cards for the Old Northside are now on flash drives and downloaded onto a computer. It is now easy for anyone to find the name and burial plot for many of the people located in the cemetery. There are still much information missing from these cards and they may never be fully completed.
The association now has a web site on the internet. It is still a project in progress and we will get more information posted on the site along with more pictures. It even has a store where you may purchase items as they become available. Currently we are featuring t-shirts with the association logo on it. The web site is http://pueblonorthside.cocemproject.org/ and has the history of the cemetery as well as an adopt a plot, which is something new we are trying out.
With approval from Parks & Rec, there is now a more secure gate located at 22nd and Blake. We submitted plans for the gate in the summer and they were approved. The gate was completed late in November. It has a concrete base with a French drain to allow run off water to filter through gravel and cut down on erosion which was a major problem.
Now that the new gate is in, our next step is to tackle the problem of the stones that are down. During the summer, a class on how to repair stones and help maintain and clean off graffiti was offered by a cemetery group in Colorado Springs. Three of our members attended this class and we now have the expertise to repair our own downed and broken stones.
